Apr 2016   レアメタルの濃縮回収を同時にこなす革新的な生物学的地下資源開発技術の基盤構築
日本のレアメタルはほぼ海外からの輸入に頼っているが、供給が困難時に備えて、最も欠かせない7種類のレアメタルは国家に備蓄されている。合金や機械産業に多く利用されるモリブデンはその一つであり、21日分も常に備えている。一方、モリブデンは全ての生物にとって必須な微量元素である。生物は環境中のモリブデンを感知し、結合して輸送したり取り込んだりするシステムが備えられている。本研究は、レアメタルのモリブデンを最初のターゲットとして、環境におけるモリブデン応答遺伝子を探索した上、生物工学を活かした効率的濃縮・回収システムの創出を目指す。本研究は以下三つの研究項目にわけて実施する:(1)モリブデン応答遺伝子の探索、(2)レアメタルの濃縮システムの基盤技術の確立、(3)濃縮したレアメタルの回収システムの基盤技術の確立。
Apr 2012   水銀汚染水の生物学的除去・回収するバイオリアクターの開発
水銀及び水銀化合物は様々な産業において使われており、日本では年間約14トン、世界的には年間約4000トンの需要量がある。しかし、高い生物毒性を持つ水銀化合物は、環境中の残留や生態系での生物濃縮などの作用を通して、世界的に大変深刻な健康被害及び環境公害問題を引き起こしており、日本においては、「水俣病」の原因環境汚染物質と確認された。水俣病のような被害が世界において二度と起こらないように、既存の水銀汚染に対する効果的、経済的、かつ安全な除去・回収技術の開発と適用が必要とされる。環境中には、水俣病の原因物質である有機水銀等の水銀化合物を分解し毒性の低い金属水銀に変換する微生物が存在しており、これらの微生物の持つ水銀浄化能力を利用した効果的な環境浄化(バイオレメディエーション)技術は、深刻化する水銀汚染を改善するための有効な対策の一つと考えられる。申請者はこれまで環境中の水銀還元細菌を持つ水銀耐性遺伝子の分子生物学的特性、環境中の生態学的分布、またバイオレメディエーションの開発に向けた組み換え微生物や植物の研究を行ってきた。本研究は、水銀還元環境細菌を固定化することにより、安全かつ有効な水銀汚染処理に適用できる生物学的水銀除去・回収システムの開発を目的とする。
