About my research

My research interest focus on the host defense mechanisms at mucosal surfaces, especially the gut. CD4+ T cells play a central role in the immune systems and differentiate into several subtypes against pathogens. Gastrointestinal nematode parasite infection induces Th2 cytokine production and results in eosinophilia, goblet cell hyperplasia and IgE production. Th2 cytokines can down-modulate Th1 cytokines including IFN and IL-12, which induce inflammatory macrophage activation. Excess immune responses elicit autoimmune disease or chronic inflammatory disease, and result in host tissue damage. Conversely, insufficient responses obviously cannot accomplish the expulsion of pathogens. It is thus important for the host to activate the appropriate immune system components and end them in a timely manner to eliminate pathogens and regulate homeostasis. Understanding Th2 immune responses through nematode parasite infection contributes to not only parasite control, but also the prevention of diseases caused by immune-system dysfunction.
