Profile

Yoriko Ishida is Professor of English at National Institute of Technology, Oshima College, Japan. She completed her doctoral work at the Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences of Nara Women’s University. She obtained her Ph.D. about study on African American literature and culture from the viewpoint of gender consciousness. She published her completed study as "Modern and Postmodern Narratives of Race, Gender, and Identity: The Descendants of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings" through Peter Lang Publishing in New York, USA. Besides, she translated Barbara Chase-Riboud’s Sally Hemings into Japanese and has also published several books written in Japanese on history, literature, and gender studies. After completing her study on African American culture, several times she has been granted research findings from Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Japanese government for her current research on gender formation and consciousness in the shipping world and maritime history. Her main field is gender consciousness and gender formation in the maritime world.
